Today I'm excited to announce "Off-Kilter", a project to design, weave and hand stitch a bespoke kilt with a twist.
January is all about inspiration and research. I'll be visiting the Tartan exhibition at V&A Dundee, studying the anatomy of a kilt and learning about the history of kilts and tartans. My Off-Kilter kilt will stretch or even break the rules, so first I must learn them. In the spring, I'll spending 3 months learning how to make a traditional hand-stitched kilt with professional Scottish kiltmaker Paula Duncan. Then I'll be designing and weaving my own tartan and working in quarter and half scale to experiment with kilt design, including pleating on the loom, before stitching my Off-Kilter kilt.
Off-Kilter is expected to last 12 months, images will be posted here with process and progress updates on my blog https://studiocynefin.blog/
