A commissioned tartan and child's kilt are now on display as part of a new Exhibition at the Children's Country House at Sudbury Hall, Derbyshire. The exhibition, Wearing Feelings: Childhood in Black and Bright highlights a variety of iconic children's garments over the past 150 years and shows how children's clothing has evolved from rigid and restrictive formality into looser and more comfortable clothes.
Studio Cynefin was asked to contribute ideas for the future, incorporating identity and sustainability. A new tartan was designed reflecting the history, architecture and colours of the house and gardens, handwoven and then hand-stitched into a child's kilt. The kilt, tartan and loom are on display in the LIbrary together with the sketchbook, toile and yarns to illustrate the role of craft and values of sustainability which were once a necessity and to which modern producers are increasingly turing as an antidote to fast fashion.
The exhibition runs until September 7th 2026, opening times are detailed on the National Trust's website
